Of Afro-Latina ancestry, she has spent more than 20 years in Baltimore involved in social justice activism and community building/health research and practice. She is the author of Race, Class, Power, and Organizing in East Baltimore. A mindfulness practitioner in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh she facilitates mindfulness retreats for activists and people of color.

Lt. Richard Goerling has served in civilian law enforcement for twenty years, including 27 years in the United States Coast Guard before retiring at the rank of Commander in 2015, and currently serves as a patrol lieutenant in Hillsboro, Oregon. Over the last decade, Richard has spearheaded the introduction of mindfulness training into policing in the United States as part of a larger cultural transformation toward a compassionate, skillful and resilient warrior ethos.
